I want you to imagine getting all the clinical benefits of microneedling – the petechiae, the growth factors, the collagen induction – without a single needle puncturing the skin. No open wound. No cross-contamination risk. No restrictions on post treatment skincare. No single-use cartridge costs eating into your margins.
That’s what I call laser needling. And in my opinion, it’s one of the most exciting developments in collagen induction therapy right now.
What Is Laser Needling?
The MIIN laser with its MLA (micro lens array) applicator uses 1064nm Nd:YAG energy to create laser induced optical breakdown – LIOB – within the dermis. Micro-injury zones are created beneath the skin surface, triggering the same wound healing cascade we rely on with conventional needling, without ever breaching the epidermis.
The clinical endpoint? Pinpoint bleeding. Without a single needle touching the skin.
When I first saw that endpoint, the connection was immediate. This is needling. But smarter.
The Biology Is the Same – But the Depth Is Greater
With conventional microneedling, we’re typically working at 1 to 1.5mm on the face. The 1064nm wavelength penetrates approximately 5-7mm into tissue – significantly deeper than any needle tip. We’re reaching the deep dermis and approaching the dermal-subcutaneous junction, which is exactly where we need to be for deep acne scarring, stretch marks and significant laxity.
The biological response is comparable to needling and in some respects superior:
- TGF-b3 stimulation – associated with organised, scarless wound healing
- VEGF release – supporting angiogenesis and tissue oxygenation
- Upregulation of IL-1, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10
- EGF stimulation
- MSH inhibition – particularly relevant for pigmentation management
- Fibroblast migration, proliferation and collagen synthesis
Because the epidermis remains intact, the inflammatory signal initiates from the dermis upward – a cleaner, more controlled healing response with less surface trauma and less downtime than conventional needling.
The Practical Advantages Are Significant
Microneedling cartridges cost between $20 and $50 per treatment. With the MLA there are no consumable costs of that nature. But the financial argument goes beyond cartridges.
With conventional needling, the skin surface is an open wound. Clients cannot apply actives, SPF or retail skincare immediately post treatment – the risk of reactions, granulomas and infection is real. That limits what clinics can offer post treatment and places a significant aftercare burden on the client.
With laser needling, the skin surface remains intact. That changes everything about the post treatment experience – for the clinic and the client.
Skin Type Inclusivity
Because 1064nm has minimal melanin absorption and targets water as its primary chromophore, the energy bypasses the melanin-rich epidermis. This makes laser needling safe for Fitzpatrick skin types I through V – a significantly broader treatment population than many other laser modalities. The primary contraindication is Fitzpatrick VI and standard laser protocols apply.
Intensity Is Everything
Like conventional needling, outcomes depend on how you use it. Spot size, fluence and energy determine the depth and degree of induction. Petechiae remains your clinical endpoint marker – your signal that you’ve reached the dermis and triggered the response you’re looking for. Too conservative and you won’t get the result. Too aggressive and you risk the outcomes we discussed in last issue’s collagen induction article.
Know your device. Know your endpoint. Know your why. Laser needling represents a genuine evolution in how we approach collagen induction – not a replacement for the clinical knowledge that underpins great needling outcomes, but a smarter, safer, more inclusive way to deliver them.
