L’Oréal Professionnel launches Head Up to raise awareness and act on hair pro’s mental health.

Since 1909, L’Oréal Professionnel has been the trusted partner of hair pros by elevating, upskilling and supporting the industry. In 2023, the brand goes further by announcing Head Up, a cause focusing on hair pro’s mental health.

Head Up: a program to support the hair pro community.

Recently, on National Are You Okay Day, L’Oréal Professionnel Australia & New Zealand proudly announces its launch of Head Up, a cause designed to support and provide resources to the hairstylists’ community and reflecting the brand’s ongoing commitment to helping hairdressers in their day-to-day life.

Being a hair professional is to be a listener. On average, they spend 2,000 hours per year listening to their clients and offer a service that goes beyond the physical transformation of a haircut or hair colour. Indeed, hair pros provide social and emotional support; as a matter of fact, 75% of clients consider going to their hairstylists as a form of self-care.

Aware of the pivotal role that hairstylists play in our society, L’Oréal Professionnel has always developed and elevated the industry. The most recent example being during the COVID pandemic, where hairstylists were faced with forced closures and revenue loss, stimulating widespread stress and anxiety. L’Oréal Professionnel created Stand for Pros, an initiative to support hair pros with free e- learning and emotional comfort.

In 2023, L’Oréal Professionnel announces its further commitment through the launch of Head Up as mental health is a key topic for the community. Indeed, the brand conducted two studies which revealed that mental health is the #1 challenge for hair pros within 6 countries, and that 65% of hairstylists have experienced anxiety, burnout or depression during their professional career.

Education: A core pillar of Head Up.

Hosted by Head Up Co-Developers Hayley Jepson and Daniel Mason Jones, the Head Up training is divided into four certifying and snackable modules of 8 minutes each:

01. Head Up Keys Resume

02. Mental Health Matters

03. I: Self Care

04. YOU: Setting Boundaries

By the end of 2023, the ambition is to train 20,000 hair pros globally thanks to Head Up Key’s first module, and 100,000 by 2025 globally. In Australia, the goal is to train 300 hairstylists in total, but with a view to amplify well beyond this.

Head Up Keys will be available online, through L’Oréal Professionnel’s website, YouTube and on the L’Oréal learning platform, ACCESS.

To create a movement and showcase online support to Head Up, L’Oréal Professionnel reveals its rallying sign which is twofold. This gesture means ‘hope’ in sign language and is also used in yoga to ground oneself. All hair pros and the wider community are invited to spread the word of this cue through their social media (see the campaign’s visuals above).
