Australia’s $7 billion hair and beauty industry is undergoing a structural shift, with more than 60% of professionals now operating as independent or sole operator businesses. As social media, personal branding and flexible work models lower barriers to entry, graduates are launching businesses earlier than ever, creating new opportunities, but also new challenges.
While technical standards across beauty education remain high, industry data shows that business capability, not technical skill is the strongest predictor of long-term success. More than half of independent beauty businesses close within their first three years, most often due to gaps in pricing strategy, cashflow management and client retention. Fewer than one-third of graduates report feeling confident managing business fundamentals in their first year.
Recognising this industry reality, Salon Lane has partnered with the French Beauty Academy to establish the Future Entrepreneur Scholarship, a program designed to support graduates not just into work, but into sustainable business ownership. The new scholarship creates a direct pathway from education to entrepreneurship, providing emerging professionals with access to structured mentoring, commercial training, community and professional infrastructure from day one.

Selected from a competitive cohort of graduating students, Sophie Baker, founder of SXPHIELASHES, has been named the first ever Salon Lane Future Entrepreneur Scholarship recipient. Sophie stood out in the application and interview process for her commercially driven mindset, the commencement of a client base and strong digital presence, qualities increasingly essential in an industry where more than 70% of new clients discover services online.
From January 2026, Sophie will begin her entrepreneurial journey at Salon Lane Teneriffe, supported by a scholarship package valued at more than $35,000, designed to accelerate early-stage business success. The award includes:
- A 12 month Beauty Studio Membership, inclusive of utilities, Wi-Fi, signage, front desk support & shared amenities.
- A tailored Business Starter Pack including one-on-one mentoring across business strategy, financial management & social media growth.
- Professional product credit to support service delivery.

The program forms part of French Beauty Academy’s Futures for Frenchies initiative, which focuses on career outcomes beyond graduation and prepares students for evolving industry pathways.
